Valentine's Day for my Husband!

I know, I know.. It is SO early to be thinking about this, but I thought of it, and I am just SO ecstatic to get started that I just had to share it with you all.

I am going to build my husband a man cave.

Nothing really fancy. Nothing overly special. It's going to be in the unfinished side of our basement, so I mean, it's going to be nice as I can make it.

My husband just wants a place where he can play his manly video games in peace without having to worry about pausing it every time my daughter walks into the room. My husband works extremely hard to provide for our family, and when he comes home, he deserves a place to hang out that is solely his. My goal is to make as nice, comfortable and manly a place as possible. My other goal is to do this for as inexpensively as possible.

The things that I will definitely need, my first priorities are:

A big screen tv, a stand to put it on, a couch or chair for him to sit on, an extension cord, and a power strip.

Things that are going to be my second priorities, are:

An area rug, a coffee table, a second chair, an additional cable box (I need to call the cable company and see if they can do this and how much it will cost before actually deciding on this), a door knob with a lock and some posters

The things that I would like to acquire if I can, or, my third priorities are:

A small dorm fridge, a game table (like air hockey or pool.. this is really out there at this point as finding one of these cheap will probably be quite difficult.), a case for movies and games, and some other things to decorate the area.

So, acquiring everything and hiding it will be my first project (I have talked to my neighbor, and she's agreed to help me hide things in her house. I am so lucky to have great neighbors! I also messaged a friend of my husband's to see if he'd help me to pick up some of the bigger things. (I really couldn't think of another way to do it without tipping my husband off at all.). My ultimate goal is for him to have absolutely no idea that I'm doing this, so pulling it off is going to be tough.

I want to present it to him by doing a scavenger hunt. I have that all planned out in my head also. (This is all I've been thinking about for two days!)

How do I plan on saving money on all of this? Well, I'm going to try to acquire the television now, because there are a lot of after Christmas and year end sales going on. I am hoping to get at least a 40" TV for around $300.

I am also going to be spending a lot of time in Goodwill, on Craigslist, ebay, and yard sales if I see any to see if I can get the other things I'm looking for, as inexpensively as possible.

If you have any thoughts on my idea, or any additional thoughts for how I can make this the best gift ever, please feel free to comment!

Eating Well During Pregnancy -- Guest Post

Eating Well During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a good time to begin following a healthy eating plan and build awareness of what exactly
food is all about: its nutritional value, the content in terms of minerals and vitamins, its benefits, the
effects or eating too much or too little of something and so forth. You will also need to learn which
foods to avoid as some foods you might normally enjoy are best avoided whilst pregnant (sea food and
blue cheese for example). If your diet was not well-balanced and erratic before pregnancy, then now is
the time to get things in line and organized.

Maximizing Genetic Health

Many couples run genetic DNA tests when planning a baby to get an assessment of their state of health.
A family history of a particular hereditary disease might warrant carrying out a DNA test to see whether
you or your partner (or perhaps both of you) carry this disease-causing mutation. Your health care
advisor will also be able to tell you, following the results of the genetic health test, what the probability
is of the baby inheriting the illness.

Moreover, you need a full appraisal of your family medical health history as well as your own. Inform
your health care specialist of any medications you take – these could adversely affect the baby if you
keep taking them during pregnancy.

The Food groups

During pregnancy, your diet should consist of an ample variety of the five basic food groups with at least
three servings of protein sources, two to three portions from the fruit group (you need seventy micro-
grams of vitamin C every day so make sure one of your fruit choices is an orange).

Iron

Twenty seven micro-grams of iron should be consumed each day so pick foods that have high iron
content like liver- especially beef liver (keep in mind that liver is also high in cholesterol so you might
want to moderate your intake). With regards to vegetables, spinach or beetroots provide a good supply
of iron.

Grains

Six or more foods from the grain and bread group and at least four servings from the vegetable list
should also be consumed. Of this list you should eat at least one serving of a leafy dark green vegetable
a serving or black beans, chick peas or even lima beans as these are an excellent source of Niacin. Niacin
is a class of vitamin B and helps produce hormones and regulate cholesterol. In pregnant women, it
helps sustain embryonic growth.

Milk and diary products

Lastly, you need four dairy group servings. You need to get at least one thousand to thirteen hundred
micro-grams of calcium each day into your diet, choosing enriched foods that are high in calcium but low
in fat and cholesterol. You will also want to avoid foods high in sodium as too much sodium can cause
Toxemia and can also increase blood pressure which may lead to pre-eclampsia. Further still, fried foods,
foods laden with rich sauces, cheese or gravies should be eaten sparingly or better not be consumed at
all. Your daily caloric intake when pregnant should be about three hundred calories more than when not
pregnant.

Eating for two: Pregnancy is not a reason to overindulge

You're pregnant so you are now eating for two, right? Do mommies expecting twins eat for three?
Throughout history this belief was the common consensus of many. However this has been proven to
have no true bearing. Nutrients to nourish your developing baby can easily be attained with a sensible
diet rich in vitamins and minerals essential for a baby's development. Under no circumstances should
a pregnant woman eat more than is necessary. Following a healthy diet consisting of portions from all
food groups, whilst also consuming her pre-natal vitamins will ensure her baby as well as herself are
receiving more than enough nutrition. Never use the “I’m pregnant, I need to eat for two” mantra to
justify over-indulging!

Get moving during pregnancy

Exercising during pregnancy is important for several reasons: it assists in increasing circulation,
decreasing common ailments such as back pains, tiredness and may help improve your posture.
Additionally, regular exercises during pregnancy may prevent gestational diabetes. It may relieve
symptoms of depression and stress as well as help prepare the mother to-be for labour and delivery
making it less painful and traumatic. Of course as with your diet during pregnancy you will want to
check with your doctor or nurse to see what exercises they recommend. Options available include pre-
natal yoga, pregnancy aquatics and even cardio and toning classes are available to pregnant women
nowadays. A sensible healthy diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals needed for the development of
your baby, an exercise plan approved by your gynaecologist and a mind free of stress will almost always
ensure you experience a healthy pregnancy and an easy delivery of a healthy baby.

Give the Gift of Time with a Delance Swiss Watch!

Today, I wanted to introduce to you a beautiful gift for the women in your life.  Delance is a swiss watch company that was developed by a lovely woman who truly feels that every woman deserves a little bit of beauty in her life. Inspired by her mother, she has began a company that truly does just that. I love watches and jewelry, and it is Christmas time, and I feel that these would make an excellent gift. (I would love one!)  But especially after hearing her wonderful story, I want to take the opportunity to tell you about a couple of her watches today, but before I do, take a moment to watch this video about how she began her company and her reasons for doing so.

"Judit" -- This was created for a mom. It's a simple steel, with a white face, yet has elegant also. It has two small diamonds. The creator of this watch was a mother of two, and selected the two diamonds to represent the birth of her children. There is also a ruby at the bottom of the face of the watch representing the love of her husband.  The recipient of this watch would most definitely feel loved, and would have a daily reminder of the love and blessings in her life!  A watch like this is beautiful and elegant enough to be jewelry, but strong and practical enough that a mom can wear this without worry.  Here's a picture of this beautiful watch.

Photobucket

"May" -- This would be a wonderful gift for a grandmother (but would be great for a mother as well!) in your life.  This one, with 18 carat gold, and a sapphire face has six small diamonds, two representing children, and four representing the grandchildren.  This watch is truly wonderful because it is customizable.  You can have the diamonds placed at the hours of the birth of the children in your life.  What a lovely reminder of the love of your children.

Either of these watches would just be a joyous gift for any of the women in your life.  Head on over to Delance and start customizing the perfect gift!

Disclaimer: I received compensation for this post.

Give Your Child a Personalized Gift from Frecklebox!

When doing my shopping for my daughter, I decided that I had definitely wanted to include some personalized gifts for kids, and that's when I came across Frecklebox! They have such a large variety of different gifts that you can give, and each of them can be personalized. They have a lot of personalized books, so I chose one of those for my daughter. She is trying to learn how to spell and write her name, so I thought this book would be absolutely perfect for her!

Here is a picture from their website.

Photobucket

On each of the pages, it asks different natural elements (grass, flowers, stars, clouds) if they can spell her name, and then shows it spelled in those elements. I think she will definitely love it and it will be a great reminder of how to spell her name. I was so impressed with the beautiful pictures inside of this one, that I wish I could have gotten one for each of the children in my family!

In addition to many, many other items, another thing that they offer, and that I chose to get for my daughter, was one of their personalized coin banks. It's girly, and there was plenty of room on ours for her first and last name, which I liked, because she hasn't seen her last name written nearly as much as her first name.

Here is another picture from their website.

Photobucket

This is definitely a wonderful gift that I would wholeheartedly recommend!

Give Your Child a Great Lunchbox from Lunchboxes.com

I had an opportunity to do a review for Lunchboxes.com. This is a good opportunity for my daughter, since she's starting school in September. I am giving her a gift of an adorable pink lunchbox with princesses on it!

Photobucket

It's the perfect size for a child's lunch. Not so small that you can't fit a lot of food inside, but not so big that it'll have a hard time fitting in a backpack either. The one thing that I wish about this particular lunchbox, is that the walls and bottom were harder. I will have to make sure to put her food into containers that won't get crushed. This is my only concern though, and it has a fairly easy solution. The benefits outweigh the problems, because I know that my daughter will just love this lunchbox. She loves all of the Disney Princesses, and her favorite color is pink.  I know that if I had given her the option, she would have chosen this one.

A little bit of information about the company:  Lunchboxes.com is the biggest online retailer of just lunchboxes out there.  They offer an extremely wide selection for children and adults alike.  They have great variety, feature a lot of your children's favorite characters.  Their lunchboxes are extremely reasonably priced, and they have a flat shipping rate if $6.95.   You are sure to find the perfect lunchbox for your child, husband, friend, or whomever you happen to be looking for.

Stadler Form Jasmine Aroma Diffuser -- GREAT Gift!

I had the opportunity to do a review for an Aroma Diffuser from Stadler Form USA. I wanted to try it out to see if it would be a good Christmas gift. I liked it so much that I decided to get one for my sister, because I'm sure she will love it!

Basically, what it is, is a small bowl, with a top on it that releases a mist with your favorite fragrance. You take water, and add a few drops of your favorite scented oil. It does this using an ultra-sonic technology to turn your scented water into a mist that can be released through the day in 20 minute intervals when it is turned on. A lot of similar diffusers run at 4 hour intervals, while this one will run through the day if you wish!

One of my favorite things about this is it's discreet, sleek appearance. You can get it in black, white, azzurro (light baby blue) or honeycomb (yellow). It really does just look like a small bowl, that you can place on a counter, table or other surface, and it just discreetly adds fragrance into the air. I chose the black (and chose the same for my sister):

Photobucket

Unfortunately, I don't think you can appreciate this product until you have it in your own home, and can feel the rubberized high quality material in your hands and then see (and smell) it in action! When it's described initially, it almost sounds like one of those "sense and spray" kind of things, but this is so much different. First of all, the mist is discreet, and silent, and not only that, but you're using natural aroma oils, so there are no chemicals going into your air!

This is another one of those products that would make a nice gift for just about any adult in your family. One of those perfect items for some of the people hardest to shop for on your Christmas list, and I would highly recommend it! The one thing that I would change, or suggest to the manufacturer, is to include a small amount of fragrance with it, as a starter pack. I had to buy some before I could use it. Not everyone has that problem, obviously, but I would like gifting it a lot more if I knew it came with everything needed to get started. This is just my own personal suggestion to the company. If you're interested in giving this as a gift, there is room in the box, so if you wanted to, you could buy your recipient some of their favorite fragrance and enclose it in the box before wrapping!

As part of my Holiday Gift Guide, I will be doing a giveaway for this product that will start tonight at midnight, so stay tuned for that!

Prenatal Testing -- Guest Post

Boy or Girl: Discovering the Gender of your baby

A simple urine DNA test can determine the sex of your baby at just 9 weeks. This is because scientists
are able to carry out analysis of fetal DNA in maternal urine and can easily confirm or exclude the
presence of Y chromosome in the sample provided. If no Y chromosome is detected, then the unborn
baby is a girl. Significantly, baby gender DNA testing in the prenatal stage has gone even further than
simply determining gender. Below are some additional applications.

Prenatal DNA testing: Autoimmune Illnesses and Paternity

Awareness of hereditary illnesses and autoimmune diseases has increased and nowadays most couples
want to ensure their child will be born healthy and strong. Depending on the age, family history and
other factors, many couples request fetal DNA testing in pregnancy to determine the genetic health of
the child if any preliminary prenatal tests suggest the possibility of a congenital disease. Conventional
methods for fetal DNA sampling such as amniocentesis, percutaneous umbilical cord sampling and
chorionic villus sampling have certain risks including damage to fetal limbs, leakage of amniotic fluid and
miscarriage. These risks make some expectant mothers highly reluctant to undergo them unless deemed
absolutely necessary.

These days one can carry out fetal DNA testing using only maternal blood samples. Such a test is totally
risk free for both the mother and the baby. When it comes to diagnosis of disease, this sampling method
is still in its early stages but results are very promising. Scientists have already successfully mapped the
entire fetal genome using only blood samples collected by a standard blood draw.

Pregnant mother’s blood samples have also been successfully used for prenatal paternity testing. This
test provides an accuracy of 99.9%.

If you wish to do go ahead with a prenatal test, whether for paternity or for hereditary illnesses in the
unborn fetus, it is recommended that you choose an AABB and ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.

What are the pros of baby gender testing and other prenatal tests?

The advantages are many and whilst people often link prenatal testing with abortion this is not an
accurate perception of reality. Clearly, knowing the sex of an unborn baby can simply be done to
help select names and bedroom color schemes. But there are more uses for baby gender testing: If,
for example, you are aware of an autoimmune disease that is specific to the Y chromosome, you do
not have to worry about any further fetal genetic health tests if the gender test results show you are
expecting a baby girl.

Prenatal testing can also carry further uses – whilst some couples might choose to terminate the
pregnancy of a child that may carry the genes for Down’s syndrome, others will simply begin preparing
in a different way for the birth and care of a special needs child, looking into the appropriate post
natal care, schooling, support groups and taking advantage of the hundreds of organizations that are
committed to improving the quality of life for people with Down syndrome worldwide.

Prenatal testing for paternity can help solve any doubts and identify the true parent as early as possible.
This means the biological father can begin playing both a supportive role and a financial one as early
as possible. It can also alleviate any stress and tension for the mother. Remember that any stress the
mother might be suffering from could affect the unborn baby.

Some claims about prenatal testing

Prenatal DNA testing for fetal genetic health and how one decides to proceed following the results is
just a matter of choice. Each couple expecting a baby weighs out the pros and the cons. Some mothers
may refrain from any type of prenatal test if they feel the risks outweigh the benefits of any knowledge
and information derived from the DNA test results. In certain countries, such as India and China, baby
gender testing is not sold by DNA testing companies because these countries are heavily patriarchal and
are known to practice gender selection. Often, they will terminate a pregnancy if they know the baby
will be a girl. The concept of termination of pregnancy for gender selection is alien to western societies
and viewed as highly unethical.

Big Boss Oil-Less Fryer--Great Gift!

I had the opportunity to review the Big Boss Oil Less Fryer, and naturally, I jumped at the chance to do this. I love fried chicken, potatoes, and things like that, and this product gives me the opportunity to cook these items deliciously and a little bit healthier!

Imagine cooking up some fried chicken, and french fries using minimal oil (meaning very little added fat!) and only using the one machine to do it. No more multiple pans for cooking meals.

This machine has the capabilities to cook a 16 pound turkey, cornish hens, french fries, fried chicken, pot roast, and so much more. Including dehydrated fruit!

So far, I've only done fried chicken cutlets (delicious!), frozen french fries, homemade fries, and home fries. (we like potatoes). The fried chicken was delicious. It was crispy on the outside, and really moist and juicy on the inside! I cut the fries a little thick so I think they probably could have used to be cooked a little longer, but they still came out good.

My favorite were the home fries. Here is this thing in action!

PhotobucketPhotobucket

They came out delicious!

Photobucket

One thing that I really like is that it's easy, and really quick. Foods are done in a fraction of the time compared to that of an oven, and this is because of the way the heat is distributed within the bowl.

Another thing that I REALLY enjoy about this fryer, is that it is SELF CLEANING! You literally just put soap and water inside the bowl, put it on "Wash", then after it finishes and cools, you just rinse it and you're done!

Photobucket

This would make a great gift, as it is an awesome addition to any kitchen! It is a versatile piece of equipment that I will use for my family over and over again!

You are my Sunshine

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy, when skies are gray. You'll never know, dear, how much I Love You. Please don't take my sunshine away.

I sing this song with my daughter every day, twice. Once before naptime, and once before bed. Today, as I was singing, I found tears coming to my eyes. Because today, a man walked into a school building, and took away the sunshine of 20 parents.

I said I wasn't going to post anything else today. I am writing this today, however, I will schedule it for tomorrow. I am merely writing this today, because this news hit me hard.

My child is starting school in September, and the idea of something like this happening to her, to kids to her age, to any child, is just a devastating thought. ONE death today was too many in such a senseless tragedy.

The thought that anytime we say goodbye to our children, anytime we tell them we love them, could be the last time. Parents aren't supposed to outlive their children. No parent deserves that, just like no child deserves to lose the opportunity to experience a whole, full life.

I also think about all of the children who have lost a bit of their innocence today. Children deserve to feel safe. School is for learning. Parents should not have to worry about what their kids are going to endure, whether they will return safely.

I wish there were more answers. I wish there were understanding as to why things like this happen. Then I wish for understanding to lead to prevention.

The fact is, that at any moment, any one of us could take our last breath. We need to let everyone in our lives know exactly how we feel about them.

I appreciate all of you who are reading this. I love sharing my feelings with you, and I love your feedback.

To the families, and community so deeply affected by Friday's events, I am sorry. I really, and truly wish I had better words for you. I wish that somehow, I was able to turn back time and prevent this. I wish I knew how we could prevent things like this from ever happening. I wish I had a way to ease your pain. But know that I am giving you the strength of prayer and will continue to do so. I hope that each of you are provided with whatever you need to find some healing. I am so very, very sorry to those of you who lost your Sunshine today.

To my family and friends, I love you. I appreciate you, and I am genuinely glad that you're in my life.

I said on Facebook, that I was going to spend my blogging time reflecting, and I have been doing that. All day. I took time for extra love, more laughter, extra hugs and snuggling. I took a lot of time to thank God for the people in my life and have asked for healing for Newton.

Let Eastwood Light up your Holidays!

I would be willing to bet that we all have that someone on their list. Someone who loves working on their vehicle. Someone who loves getting a job done with their own hands. My husband is like that, which is why, when given the opportunity to do a review from Eastwood for my Holiday Gift Guide, I jumped at the chance.

One night, my husband's headlight in his truck went out, and he was trying to fix it with no light in our driveway. He ended up having to half pull it into the garage so he could use the combination of the indoor and outdoor garage lighting in able to see to finish the job! For Christmas this year, he is getting a
30+1 Surface-Mount LED Retractable Worklight Combo from Eastwood.

Photobucket

This is a combination flashlight and worklight. The body is retractable which lets you control where your light is going (which is really great for our men working under the hood, especially at night!) There's also a built in mounting hook and mounting magnets allowing it to attach easily to their work surface (also great for working under the hood!) It also has rechargeable batteries, and comes with both wall AND car chargers! It's not huge, but it's definitely bright enough to help with any job (without being overwhelming. LED lights are so great anyway.) It's a perfect shape to comfortably use as a regular flashlight as needed (there's an additional light at the top that you couldn't really see in the picture.) in addition to using it as a work light. Not only that, but right now, these are on sale for only $19.99 on Eastwood's Website!

Don't worry though, the next item that I received from them would also be a great gift for a man OR a woman (It is a handy tool that everyone should have that will fit right into your purse!).

It's a mini ratchet and bit set.

Photobucket

I think that every home should have at least one set of bits and a ratchet tool. (I remember being in college and my then soon to be brother in law MAKING me buy a small ratchet set to keep in my car, so that whoever was going to help me should I need it would have the tools on hand.) I think that even if we don't always know what to do, we should at least make an effort to have some basic tools in our home (and I guess it wouldn't kill us to make an effort to try to use some of them for basic home fixes) This is why I say that this particular gift would make an excellent gift for men or women (or college students!).

This set is selling right now on their website for only $14.99!

Give the gift of HEALTHY Ice Cream!!

Yonanas is a really wonderful gift! For SO many different kinds of people. Whether you're someone who loves fruit, or you love a nightly bowl of ice cream, or, even better, both, this is a GREAT product that would make an excellent gift. For example, my daughter and I recently went out for frozen yogurt with our neighbor the other day. She got fruit flavored yogurt with fruit toppings, and it clicked that this would be a really wonderful gift for her (I really hope she's not reading this!)

Basically, what this product does, is take frozen bananas (or other frozen fruits) and use them to make a delicious and creamy (despite the fact that there's no cream or dairy) dessert that looks, tastes and feels like soft serve ice cream!

Here are the directions for using this directly from the company:

Banana Preparation

1. Purchase Dole bananas one week prior to peeling and freezing. Allow bananas to over-ripen (cheetah spots) should be fully developed on bananas.

Photobucket

2. Peel and freeze over-ripe bananas at least 24 hours before use. Freeze bananas in a storage container or re-sealable plastic bag.

How to Make yonanas

1. Making yonanas is simple! To ensure frozen fruit runs through the machine easily, we recommend you thaw the frozen bananas and additional frozen fruit approximately 7-10 minutes just before use.

Freezers are different and this will dictate whether or not you will run frozen fruit immediately through the yonanas maker, or need to thaw a few minutes. If storing fruit in a cooler with ice or dry ice, you will also need to take into consideration how cold the fruit is. If it is too thawed, the product is not as ice-cream like.

2. The yonanas maker consists of two pieces: the motor base and the chute assembly. Ensure the chute assembly is locked in at 12:00. This safety feature will lock the chute in place and allow the machine to turn on and off.

Photobucket

There is just one button! On & Off.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

3. Insert frozen fruit into the chute and push thefruit down using the plunger. Alternate between pieces of bananas and additional fruit when pushing fruit through the chute to help blend the yonanas together.

Photobucket

4. It takes seconds to enjoy yonanas!

Photobucket

5. Remove the chute assembly from the yonanas maker base, unscrew the cone and scrape out any extra yonanas that might be there.

See how easy this is to use? The finished product looks and tastes great also. Cleanup is easy also, you separate the parts, and wash them in soapy water, or they are also dishwasher safe! Just make sure that each part is dry before putting it back together.

I highly recommend this is a gift for just about anyone on your gift list. It really is something that any of us can use!

Embarrassing stories!

I know that we all have at least one story. One time in our life where we did something that made us want to disappear (at least long enough for the red to fade from our faces!)

I could probably come up with a million stories, starting during childhood (like the time that I ran and pushed my arm through a window, shattering it; or the time that my pants fell down on the school bus.) through my teenage years (I think I was just constantly embarrassed from about 12-17.) and even, yes, sadly, well into my adult life.

Just two days ago, for instance, I was shopping at CVS. I bought just a few things, it wasn't a huge shopping trip (which is good, a lot of bags would have made this situation so much worse!). I was running late, and in a hurry, and well, I'm a little clumsy. The sidewalk ended sooner than I thought it did, and down I went, right in front of a lady sitting in her car. Now, I hurt my knee pretty bad (I'm still limping around on it.) and twisted the opposite ankle. To add insult to injury (literally!) I ripped my pants at the knee. The lady sitting in her car was really pretty sweet, she got out and asked me if I was okay, then she said she'd help me up but she was sick (at CVS picking up prescriptions) and contagious. I hate to say it, characteristically, this wasn't one of my better moments, but as nice of her as it was to make sure I was alright, I really just wanted to hobble back to my car so I could sulk at home!

Here are a few stories that a few of you have shared with me!

"When my hubby and I had just started seeing each other ( and you want everything perfect!!) We had gone to pick up some things at the store, all was well got out went to close the door and get my son out of the back truck door and then WHAM!!! closed the door and then turned right into the mirror! for me it's face height! Knocked myself right to the ground!!!!"

"I'll share my best friend's, lol. When my friend was in high school, her parents got a new van that had those large pull back doors on either side. With both doors open and the the seats out of the car, my friend decided to do a bit of showboating. Her idea: To run full speed, make a flying leap through the car with a tuck and roll, emerging on the other side looking super awesome.
After calling for her family to watch, she ran at the car full speed, jumped, and....missed the door. Her head hit the side so hard, she knocked herself out! Fortunately it wasn't for long, because she came to with her family still laughing."

And from the same person as the last one (and one of my personal favorites!):

"While I was in college, after a very bad day of receiving back a failing grade on a quiz, losing hours of work on a project I had completed with extra credit due to a computer error, and then breaking my shoe laces, I went back to my college dorm room to try on my new headphones that just came in.
And - then my headphones broke. I took out the super glue bottle, but it was jammed (I realized later I needed to pop the top first), so I squeezed super hard. I jumped out of my seat as the bottle exploded in my hand and was covered on my shirt. My shirt, btw, which ironically was a cartoon of a cat saying he had, "clawed and scratched his way to the middle."
When I went to wipe off my shirt, I realized that the super glue was firmly gripped on my hand. I couldn't move my fingers *at all.* With no nail polish remover, I went first to the campus infirmary - which had just closed. The campus police was next door, and after laughing, they said there was nothing they could do but call the paramedics. Declining, I continued to make my way to the store near campus with the idea of buying a lot of acetone nail polish remover.
As I passed the science building, I realized that they would have lots of acetone! I went to a professor, who after getting in a good laugh, led me to the chemistry lab. The students, after good in a good laugh, gave me the acetone. I had to hold my hand in acetone for 20 minutes before the bond broke! "

From Miss Jackie's Views
"...I was at the funeral home for a dear friend whose father passed away. We decided to go outside to have a smoke, as we were walking along I tripped on the sidewalk. When I stood up I discovered my half slip had fallen down and was wrapped around my ankles. What made it even better was there were people coming towards us including the funeral home director who saw the whole thing. Pulled my slip on and started walking like nothing happened"

Last but not least!

Taking my daughter to the doctor in wintertime, slick parking lot. A car was coming, so I picked her up, only I started to slip. I didn't want to fall on top of her, so I managed to keep on my feet until I crashed into the glass door of the doctor's office, completely shattering it. We were both fine, but totally embarrassed."

GREAT Finish Coupons!

FINISH®
This morning, after breakfast, I used the last of our dishwasher detergent, meaning that later today, I have to go buy some more. Naturally, that means coming to my computer and looking for coupons for it! This is when I came across the fact that if you sign up with Finish, you can get up to five exclusive coupons just for signing up with them! I decided to share this with you before signing up myself.

I am someone who HATES washing dishes (and doing laundry and vacuuming for that matter!) so when I run out of dishwasher detergent, I need to go get more fairly soon, which is why being able to accumulate five coupons is really wonderful for me!  If you decide to take advantage of this offer as well, just click the picture up there, and it will take you right to where you need to go!  Happy Couponing (and dish washing?)

Charity for Christmas

Today, I wanted to let you know about something that blogging has helped me to do.

Most people know that we get products to review, get paid to write some posts and other than that, we, as bloggers are sharing with you our thoughts and views on life, family and everything else.

Here's what you don't know. I, indeed have made a small amount of money doing this. The reviews and the money are providing my family's Christmas (that was a big goal that I set for myself, and I am so excited that I've been able to reach that goal.). But, in addition to that, I have taken some of the money that I've made, and used it to buy goods to be donated to others.

The first thing I did, was purchase food items and donate them to my church, as they hand out food baskets to people who are in need. They hand out a list, and I bought a decent amount of food to contribute to that.

The other thing that I did, was call a local homeless shelter, and ask them what they needed! If you decide to donate items to a shelter that you're going to be purchasing, I would highly suggest calling first, because you might be surprised at what they need verses what they had plenty of. For instance, when I called my local shelter, they had plenty of the things that I was going to buy (I was going to get a few blankets, gloves and other "keeping warm items"). What they needed, however, were paper towels, laundry detergent, and hats. So instead of purchasing just a few blankets, I bought 24 rolls of paper towels, four economy sized laundry detergents and ten hats. This may seem like a lot, but this shelter provides services for up to 80 people at one given time (which, in itself, considering this is not the only shelter in the area, showed me the fact that there's such an overwhelming need for this.)

Not only did I walk away feeling good because we helped out, but I was also able to teach my daughter a lot that day. We went in to the store together, and I let her know what they needed and why we were doing this. Then, we went together to bring the stuff, and I was able to fully explain where we were going, and why they needed this stuff.

I highly suggest doing this. Not only is it a good thing to do, but it's a great lesson in sharing for your family. Think about this. We are all as close as one bad decision away from having to rely on the kindness of others for shelter, sustenance and life's other necessities.

If you are interested in helping out, but aren't sure where to start, let me help you!  Use the contact tab at the bottom of the screen.  Tell me where you live (a zip code would be fine), and I will find your nearest shelter, and will even call them, and find out when they accept donations, and what they are in need of.

Eagle Nest Outfitters SingleNest Hammock -- GREAT Gift!!!

Photobucket

As I was looking for products for men in my Holiday Gift Guide, I came across Eagles Nest Outfitters, and saw a wide array of products that would make wonderful gifts for men, and really, for whole families.

In fact, my husband has been asking for a hammock for MONTHS (well, he has stopped mentioning it recently, because the weather hasn't really favored sitting outside in a hammock), so when I came across the SingleNest Hammock, and this is what he's getting for Christmas!

Untitled

It really is perfect for my husband. It comes in a sack small enough to fit into my medium sized purse, it only weighs 17 ounces, so it's perfect for traveling light and for camping also. But it's also a strong, durable nylon that can hold up to 400 lbs, and would also make a great addition to a back yard for single person relaxation. This is most likely what my husband will use it for!

Photobucket

I was a little shocked when I initially saw the small packaging, but then when I removed it from the packaging, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw how durable it was, and how strong the suspension system that came with it was as well! Everything all together came in a box that was smaller than a shoe box. This is a system that is GREAT for travelling and camping. Why sleep in a sleeping bag when you can bring your hammock each time you go camping and sleep under the stars!

See how versatile and portable this is?

Photobucket

This would make a great gift for dad, grandpa, brothers, and sons. I know my husband is going to have competition when this thing goes up in the yard!

They also come in a great many colors, so you can pick the colors that will fit your recipient's (or your) preferences also.

The SingleNest Hammock can be purchased at Eagles Nest Outfitters for $54.95! If you want to be able to lounge with the recipient of this gift, you can purchase a DoubleNest Hammock instead for $64.95!

Best Ways to Gain Extra Space in your Home

Best ways to gain extra space at your home

If you have a small home, then you might be feeling a little cramped because your furniture and
other items are taking up a lot of room. The best thing you can do is use little tricks to make your
rooms look bigger while also understanding how to properly store items. This article will show
you how to maximize the space in your home so that everything looks better.

Extra Uses

Most rooms have just one use. For example, the dining room is meant for eating. If you want to
gain extra space, then you should learn to assign different uses to each room. The dining room
can also be used to store related items, or you can use the dining room for family game night and
other functions.

This maximizes your storage, and it also allows you to do several things in one room. This
means that every room will be used to its limit. Your items will be more organized since you are
intentionally designating each room for additional uses.

More Shelves

Shelves are great when you are trying to gain more space in your home. Cramming everything
you can into the closet or basement makes it look cluttered, and you often lose storage space
because objects are scattered everywhere. Shelving organizes the storage space, makes it easier
to find things, there is less visual weight and you can often store more objects.

You can add adjustable shelving if your storage needs are constantly changing. This means that
you can easily make a space larger or smaller depending on your immediate needs.

You should consider adding more shelves to other rooms. This allows you to store additional
items, and they tend to have less visual weight because items on a shelf look more organized
than items on the ground.

Less and Smaller Furniture

Furniture is often the biggest thing in any room. Removing all of the furniture makes a room
look much bigger, but you obviously want furniture so that you can use your rooms. The best
balance between the two is using fewer and smaller pieces of furniture. Replacing just a few
pieces of furniture will make your room look huge.

Functional Furniture

You should also consider functional furniture. These are pieces that are made with storage in
mind. For example, consider getting end tables with drawers. This gives you a small table for
drinks and other items, and there are drawers on the bottom for storing more objects.

This allows you to reduce the visual weight in the room while organizing your objects.

Necessary Items

Do you really need everything in your home? Most people throw their old jackets and toys in the
basement or attic. You might use some of these items again, but think about how necessary these
objects really are. The truth is that most families have an attic and basement full of things that
will never be picked up and used again.

Selling these items or giving them to charity not only makes you feel good, but it frees up a lot
of space. This means that you can store more items. You can also keep your main rooms from
looking cluttered.

Rearrange Rooms

Most people are scared of rearranging their rooms, but this can actually give you a lot of new
space. For example, you may have a huge living room that isn’t used that often, or you might
require much less space for your living room. You can move all of the furniture and objects to
another room, and make that the new living room. You can now use the empty room for an
entirely new purpose.

People are afraid of doing this because it means changing the entire organization and structure of
the home, but it can give you all of the space that you need. Just consider rearranging and
optimizing your rooms to give yourself more space.

Conclusion

Many people think they don’t have a lot of space in their homes, but you can maximize your
home by just moving things around and wisely using all of your storage space. This will make it
easier to store your objects, and your house will look a lot bigger.

Give Your Child Comfort and Play with Zoobies!

Photobucket

I was given the opportunity to review (and giveaway, so look out for that!) Zoobies! They offer a few different products for children including Book Buddies,Blanket Pets, Duffle DogsSlumber Pets, Blankie Babies and Storytime Pals!

I was given a Blanket Pet for review. I was excited about this, because my daughter loves stuffed animals. She has at least a dozen of them on her bed, and she even has two pillows shaped like stuffed animals, so adding a Blanket Pet to that collection seemed like a wonderful idea for her. This was an excellent gift for her.

They have quite a few different animals to choose from. I chose Patch the Pinto (which I just found out, is unfortunately currently retired) for review. It's really quite adorable.

When I received the product, the first thing that I loved, was how soft it was. I wanted one for myself (Dear Zoobies -- if you ever make an adult Blanket Pet, I would love buy one!) Also, I was impressed with the fact that when the blanket is tucked away, this is just like a stuffed horse. This means that during the day, she'll have a toy she can play with, and a stuffed animal to snuggle, and come night time, we can pull the blanket out and she can use that!

Photobucket

Part of what I love about things like this product, is that it's something she can use every day in our home, but it's also easily compact, so when we travel and she spends the night elsewhere, it is incredibly easy for her to have that piece of home with her.We have family that lives far away, so when we go to visit, those little home items are so important! This is just one thing that I, as a mom, like about this product!

At this time, just in time for your Holiday Shopping, you can get 20% off any one Zoobies product on their website! Just use the coupon code "Parenthood". The prices of these items are already pretty reasonable (another reason they make an excellent gift!), and now you can get an additional discount!

Reading Eggs' new App, Eggy Alphabet!

Photobucket

Yesterday, I posted about using the computer to play educational games with your children, and coincidentally, today, I found out about a website called Reading Eggs! This is a site that helps your children learn to read. It's something she can do by herself, or with you, and it helps her to learn her reading, spelling, grammar and more!

Photobucket

They have age and skill appropriate games, stories and activities for your child as he or she takes that leap into learning how to read. These games were developed by a team of experienced teachers, educational writers, and web developers.

I am learning lately, from other parents, that children are encouraged to know more at a younger age now, than they used to be when we were children. They should know letters, numbers, shapes, colors, and more before even beginning kindergarten, which is why sites like these are such a great thing! I mean, I am a parent, not a teacher, so I really rely on the resources that are at my disposal to help me prepare my daughter for the beginning of her education. I want to give her the tools that she needs to succeed academically from the very beginning!

One of the best things about this website, is that you get a 14 day FREE trial to try the site out with your child and see if it's a good fit!

This gets even better. They have recently launched an iPad app called Eggy Alphabet! It can be purchased from the app store for only $2.99 (But, there's a free version as well! Keeps getting better and better, right?) Each version comes with alphabet games that help your child to learn their letters. Your children will have fun while developing important skills in literacy! Go ahead and check Eggy Alphabet in the app store!

This evening, I signed up for the free version of this game, and look forward to playing with my daughter and seeing how she likes it! We may end up buying it for her for Christmas!

If you want more information about Reading Eggs, you can look at their website, or check them out on Facebook and Twitter, and like I said before, you can see their new app Eggy Alphabet at the app store.

Lunchbox Love!

Photobucket
Photobucket
I think most of us have a mom on our Christmas gift list this year. Someone who loves doing those little things for their children, and spouses that bring a simple joy to life. Perhaps YOU are one of those moms! The kind that leave notes in your children's lunches sometimes.. Just to remind them that you love them. My daughter isn't in school yet, and therefore, this doesn't quite apply to us yet. But I do leave notes and cards in my husband's lunch sometimes. I like to remind him in the middle of his day, that I love, appreciate and am thinking about him. I've been giving him a Christmas one every few days, and he gets a kick out of them. I get phone calls saying things like "I made your awesome list, huh?" I am actually planning on putting that one below next to an empty cookie plate on Christmas morning. How awesome that will be when she thinks a note came from Santa about her cookies!
Photobucket

I have found such a great product for this. It's called Lunchbox Love and they're adorable. I absolutely love them. They are small cards with loving messages on the front, and fun little facts on the back. They're great. My husband gets a kick out of a few of the Christmas ones that I've put in his lunch, and even, as a group of grown men, the fun facts have given them things to talk about while they're working. I can't wait to be able to share these with my daughter also (she has to learn how to read first, of course, but she'll love them when she can, I'm sure of it!

Family Internet Time!

It's so funny how so many things are different now, than they were when we were children. There are so many things that we can do with our kids and as a family that we didn't have back then.

One of my daughter's favorite things is playing with me on the computer. There are so many great websites geared directly toward children, it's wonderful. We play games, watch movies and even read stories. We use the internet for all of these things on our computer, as well as playing video games and watching online streaming of television and movies, all with our Comcast internet service.

My personal favorites, are the websites that have educational services. I have written a review for one or two of them in the past, but they are so beneficial.  My little one loves using the computer, because she sees me using it all of the time, so she likes "working on the computer like mommy".  This is quality time that we're spending together, and she's learning the whole time (though it's just fun for her!)  Most of the children's channels that we watch together sometimes have educational games on their websites.

Computer games are a huge help with motor skills, in addition to whatever the educational purpose behind the actual game is (lots of reading and number games out there!).  Not only that, but, let's face it:  in this day and age, kids must learn how to use a computer.  Why not give your younger children a really beneficial head start.

On a side note, if I were to be completely honest, I haven't done as good a job as I could in instilling the skills necessary to operate a computer in my daughter yet (I do most of the controls when we're playing games.).  I know that I need to, but I always have this worry that our computer will end up broken (keep in mind this is coming from a mother of a child who has more broken toys than she probably should.).  But she starts school in a year, so we will be having some basic computer lessons soon!  If any of you have any recommendations on good websites on teaching children about the computer, they are welcome in the comments!
