Four Ways to Reconnect With Your Daughter -- Guest Post

The mother-daughter relationship is one of the most complex paths you’ll navigate. It’s easy for the two of you to drift apart, to bump heads, to make each other mad. Discover 4 ways to reconnect with your daughter, and use them regularly to keep your relationship healthy and close.

The Mother-Daughter Disconnect

All mother-daughter relationships have ups and downs, says Dr. Roni Cohen-Sandler, author of I’m Not Mad, I Just Hate You! A New Understanding of Mother-Daughter Conflict. She identifies three primary complaints that mothers have, and three that daughters have. Daughters find their moms too critical, too demanding, and think they do too much parenting. Moms find that their daughters don’t listen to them, don’t make time for them, and make poor life choices.
You can see how it might become a cycle. Mom thinks Daughter makes poor choices; Daughter thinks that Mom is critical. Find ways to reconnect with your daughter to keep your relationship stronger.

Go to a Concert Together

Look for female performers coming near you in the future, and take your daughter to a concert. A concert is a fun activity that will create lifelong memories, and the two of you may share a love of the music together. Some female performers appeal to a wide base of listeners. Carrie Underwood tickets, for example, are the perfect gift to bring the two of you together.

Show Interest in Her Interests

Try to learn a little more about the things that your daughter likes. What books does she read? What are her favorite television shows? If you don’t know, try looking on her social media profiles. People commonly share the things they like on these sites. Read the same books, watch the same shows, and you’ll have something to talk to your daughter about.

Go Grocery Shopping Together

Mothers and daughters commonly go clothes shopping together as a bonding exercise, and this commonly goes poorly. Mothers and daughters don’t often see eye-to-eye about what the younger party should wear. Grocery shopping, however, is different. Everyone has to eat food, so it’s an easy common ground. While you’re shopping for foods you’ll learn a lot about your daughter’s eating habits and taste preferences. This is also an activity that can extend. After shopping together, cook or bake something together.

Ask Her about Specific Friends and Boyfriends

Don’t ask “how was your day” or “how is school/work going?” when talking to your daughter. When you ask her about her life, try using names you’ve heard her mention or people you know she’s close with. For example, ask “How is your friend Angela doing?” instead. And ask, don’t pry. Remember these questions should be used as ice breakers or conversation starters – you’re not giving her the third degree.

Finding ways to spend time with your daughter isn’t enough. You also have to learn how to talk to her. Reconnect with your daughter often, and take an active part in your relationship, to keep it healthy.

17 Pounds Down!

So, I figured it's probably time for an update on my weight loss. I have received a lot of support here, and I know that some of you are right beside me on this journey, so I just wanted to let you know that so far, I am down a total of 17 pounds.

I have had a little bit of help from Creative BioScience, and their African Mango Supplement. I take two every morning, and it really helps to take away my appetite. I eat SO much less. I honestly have very little interest in eating when I take it. This is really good for me as over-eating was something that was a huge issue for me.  This was personally recommended to me because of how much weight I had to lose, and the fact that I really didn't want to follow any sort of real crazy diet.  This is marketed as something that you can take, and will help without having to make any real diet changes, however, it decreased my appetite enough that I really did end up changing.  This has been an amazing help because I really wanted something that was going to help me change my attitude toward food, and this has helped me do that.  I can safely say, now, that I am no longer someone that feels the need to finish my plate.  I am not serving myself large quantities of food anymore, because I simply no longer feel like it.  Decreasing my appetite is helping me retrain my body and reshape my eating habits, and that has helped me immensely.

I am obviously no where near finished with my weight loss journey, but if you are like me, and hoping to reshape your appetite, your attitude toward food, and obviously your body, this is an avenue that I would definitely recommend taking.  Just so you know, I will also be doing a giveaway a little later on so that some of my readers can also try this product also.  I hope it gives you all results like it has me.

What would you do for you?

If you could be selfish, and do one thing for you, what would it be? Think selfishly for a few moments, and have a bit of fantasy time. This is something that I did last night, and came up with an interesting answer.  Forget about money and time for a minute, and pretend that you have an unlimited supply of both (hey, I said it was a fantasy, right?)

Before I share mine, I will also say that I asked this on my Facebook page this morning, and got a few really interesting answers.

One person said that they'd love a Spa Day.  This sounds great.  Pampering at it's finest.

One lady also said that she would take her family on a vacation to Hawaii (how great does that sound?!)  She said that she went on her honeymoon and wants to take her children and take another trip!

Another person said that she would just pay her friend's student loans off as it's a stress in this friend's life (how unselfish is that?!)

I am always interested in the different ideas that you guys have. I love reading your thoughts!

Here's what I would do, and it seems simple (and for some of you, probably more attainable).  I would hire a personal trainer, and get a meal plan (like nutrisystem or ediets or something along those lines) to help me finally get the rest of this weight off, as it's something that I've struggled with forever, and it would really improve my self-esteem, and overall quality of life.

So, now I want to hear from more of you. What is something that you would do, just for you, if you could?  Share it in the comments!

Immune system boosters for the whole family -- Guest Post

Immune system boosters for the whole family
Does it seem like cold and flu season never ends at your house? Usually, it follows a pattern.
One family member brings the illness home, and before you know it, everyone comes down with
the sickness.

Fortunately, there is a way to break this cycle. Building a stronger immune system is easier than
you think, and it might even bring you closer as a family.

Exercise Together

Increasing the functioning of your immune system can be as simple as elevating your heart rate
for 20 minutes three times each week. That’s because regular exercise has been shown to
increase the number of leukocytes in the human body. These powerhouse cells are associated
with a robust immune system. Additionally, physical activity also releases a helpful, pleasurable
rush of endorphins that can boost feelings of well being and help you sleep better. Make exercise
a regular family activity. Take a walk, go for a bike ride, play basketball, hit the tennis court or
kick around a soccer ball.

Get Plenty of Sleep

When we’re short on sleep, we’re much more likely to get colds and flus. Scientists think that
lack of sleep causes an increase of cortisol, a stress hormone, in the body. Inadequate sleep can
also cause inflammation and irritability, so getting seven to nine hours every night is important
for adults. Kids may need even more. For optimum results, make sure kids get eight hours at a
minimum, and even 10 hours can be beneficial.

Manage Stress

A little stress can be good for the body. It helps us respond appropriately to danger and can even
motivate us to complete tasks. However, too many people live in a constant state of stress. When
you’re under stress for long periods of time, your body produces an excess of cortisol and
adrenaline. Both of these substances have the effect of suppressing the immune system, leaving
the door open for minor colds and also more serious diseases.

To combat stress, consider meditation. Although it takes practice, studies have shown that
regular meditation has a positive effect on the strength of the immune system. You can meditate
as a family or individually. However, if the meditation route isn’t right for you, there’s other
ways to break the cycle of stress. Among the most powerful of these is the word “no.” When
your family is constantly being pulled in a dozen different directions because of too many
obligations, then it’s time to think about what can be cut out. A little extra free time can
significantly reduce stress. Plus, that free time gives your family a chance to do something
together. Perhaps you could watch a funny movie together, as scientists have found that laughing
actually has the effect of reducing stress hormones in the body.

Cut Down on Sugar and Fat

Eating unhealthy foods is a sure way to pack on the pounds, but it also reduces the immune
system’s ability to attack harmful bacteria. It’s white blood cells that fight these bacteria, and
they can’t operate at optimum strength when the body is under the influence of a lot of fat and
sugar. If dessert is a daily habit for your family, start scaling back to see an improved immune
response.

Supplement with Antioxidants

Your body naturally produces molecules that are called free radicals, which can damage your
healthy cells. When you consume antioxidants, you provide your body with the tools it needs to
fight off the free radicals. Antioxidants like vitamins C and E along with zinc and beta-carotene
can revolutionize the functioning of your immune system. Apples, berries, spinach, sweet
potatoes, red grapes, onions and carrots are all filled with healthy antioxidants. You might also
supplement your menu with fresh garlic and mushrooms like shiitake and maitake to provide a
further boost.

Cut Out a Bad Habit

Smoking brings with it many negative side effects. Not only does the smoker suffer physically,
but those who inhale the second hand smoke do as well. A house where there is a smoker is
much more likely to have inhabitants that are susceptible to illness, one more good reason to
kick the habit forever.

Keep your Family Safe with Family Search Alert

 photo FSA_zps6bee8c47.jpg

I was given the opportunity to sign up for something that gives me a little bit of extra piece of mind when it comes to the safety of my family and pets. It is a service called Family Search Alert, and I truly think that every family should have this as a precaution.

There are certain things that none of us like to think about. Kidnappings, children going missing, pets going missing and more. These things are nightmares, really. It's incredibly scary to think about, so much so, in fact, that some of us just don't. Do you have a plan if your child were to go missing one day? From your home, school or even the grocery store? What would your first response be?

photo FSA1_zpsdda93e0b.jpgI obviously would first call the police, and do everything I could myself to find her. However, now, I know that I can utilize Family Search Alert, which gives me the ability to utilize text messaging, email, social networking and more to get the word out to everyone I know, to get the help I need. The basic plan, which allows me to do all of those things is absolutely free to use, but for only $24.99 a year, we can also have automated phone calls, cell phone calls and even faxes, and also print fliers in addition to emailing, text messages and social networking. Now, let's face it, not everyone has all forms of modern technology. Not only that, but I know that there are people whom I have a phone number for, but not an email address. This doesn't just cover our children, but can also be used for our pets and the seniors in our lives as well.

There are two kinds of alerts that you are able to send out. A "Yellow Alert", which enables you to write the message that your recipients will receive. This is good for a situation where you don't really feel that it's an emergency requiring the police just yet. (Say you haven't heard from an elderly parent today and it's concerning you, or, perhaps your dog got loose a while ago). Then, there's also a "Red Alert". This is an automated message that your recipients will receive, and it also allows the police to access your information (only information that will be pertinent to your case). This is obviously for real emergencies, and it will not be available for your pets.

You can actually use the promo code "MomShow01" to get a discounted price of $19.99 per year of service.  This code expires on 4/6/2013 so act now!

Like I said before, sometimes, terrible things happen. We absolutely never like to think about them, however, we should always be prepared for any situation. It's hard to prepare yourself to deal with a situation when you're devastated and panicked so now is a great time to make sure you're ready to take action just in case!

Let Zaggora Help you Get Fit!

As many of you know, I have been working on losing weight. When I made the decision to begin this journey, I began looking at different companies, products and services. This is when I came across Zaggora. They have an awesome line of clothing that generates more heat while you're moving, increasing both your body temperature and your calorie burn! They offer various products, including both tops and bottoms.

I received their HotPants 2.0 Capris.

 photo capri2_zps719dbfb1.png

I have to say, I was a little skeptical that these pants would make any difference at first. After wearing them for only a week, I really did notice a difference, and have been wearing them frequently ever since. I wear them whenever I work out, of course, and then I also wear them on days when I don't work out when working around the house and other things.  When I am wearing them, they feel warm (I have loved having them through the winter, actually), but a comfortable warm.  There is actually nothing uncomfortable about them.

I have noticed a difference in my bottom.  Also, I don't know if I just got ones that are too big, or if they're supposed to do this, but I have also noticed a surprising difference in what some lovingly call the "mother's apron" that I've been desperately trying to lose (unfortunately, it's still there, but I'm hoping not for too much longer!).

These can be purchased directly on their website for $104.00.  I am actually considering ordering more because they are absolutely worth the money.  Whether you're new to fitness and exercise (kind of like me!) or you're a seasoned athlete, if you're looking for some quality workout clothing I highly recommend this company!

Listerine 21 Day Challenge -- Final Post!

Photobucket

As you may remember from this post, I had told you guys about three weeks ago, that I was going to be taking part in Listerine's 21 Day Challenge. The last day of the challenge was last week (though I love using Listerine, so the end of the challenge really doesn't mean that much will be changing for me.)

I basically told you all that I was going to devote three weeks to maintaining better oral health for my daughter and I. Part of which, included making sure that both of us continued brushing twice a day, flossing every day and using Listerine mouthwash.  One of the reason that I wanted to join in on this challenge (which you can still join in on by checking out their Facebook page.), is because I wanted to use and introduce to my daughter a mouthwash that gets rid of all of the germs in our mouths (brushing our teeth doesn't get as many of them as we'd think).  My daughter loves their children's line, and my personal favorite is their orange flavor.

I have some wisdom teeth that give me trouble sometimes, and I have to say that using Listerine to remove bacteria for three weeks has helped a lot (I was using salt water when it bothered me, but that hasn't been necessary!).  I have also noticed, that morning breath (we all have it!) for all of us has decreased slightly as well.

I would definitely call the 21 day challenge a huge success, and would still recommend for you to try it!
